About Korea Local Buddy
‘Sa – ra’
From UK / Teacher / Lives in Seoul, South Korea now
Making friends is difficult, especially if you’ve just moved to a brand-new city or if you are just traveler. And you are digital-nomad in not your country. You might Okay, even you are alone. But when you make friends in you destination, New world will be appear.
Actually, I recently moved to Seoul, South Korea as a English teacher and traveler. Because I’ve fallen in love with K-pop and K-drama.
Anyway, I’m not exactly the kind of person who has the luxury of meeting people organically. So after a few weeks of loneliness and hanging out constantly with my only co-worker, I decided to take matters into my own hands-or rather, on my phone.
As it turns out, There are several apps for meeting local friends or expats and making new friends, whether you’re a traveler or newbie in an unfamiliar town or a hermit with no social life. Unfortunately, a lot of these apps don’t work. Some of apps are not activated in Korea for example Couch surfing and Facebook groups.
I used this app over a month.
I reviewing 5 apps and recommend only one.
1km(Free; IOS and Android),
For example, is an app that connects you with random nearby locals for chatting and meeting up (if you want to). It’s great for places with tons of people who are in the same boat as you, like college campuses, Also, you can find a group who has same hobby or gender. However, I tried 1km few weeks and the number of people who want to talk with me are men. Actually, 99% was men and they made me embarrassed. Because they want to meet me in a not-so-platonic way. And it’s not for foreigner so if you can’t speak Korean at all, I never recommend this!
Meetup (free; iOS and Android).
Meetup, if you’re dead set on finding purely platonic relationships based around shared interests meetup is quite good. Meetup is a social service that lets you organize and join local, real-life “meetups” for people who share your interests. Meetup groups range from broad (“DTLA Happy Hour Crew”) to specific (“The Real Time Lords of Orange County”), so there’s a pretty good chance you’ll find one tailored to your particular interests. If you’re not sure where to start, try looking for Meetups for your demographic.
Meetup is one of the most effective apps for meeting friends—where by “friends,” I mean people who have no interest in dating you (unless you happen to join a “singles” Meetup group). Because the service focuses on meeting people in real-life, the app itself is more of a handy way to find the group, rather than a social networking app you’ll spend hours chatting away on. Using meet-up left much to be desired that I could not find local Korean friends. Most of groups use only English except for language meet up. Also there are no one to one meeting and you don’t know about participant. so If you wanna hang out like local and make a close friendship I’m not recommend this.
Serentrip – Travel buddy & Locals (free; iOS and Android)
My Korean Friends who met in my last meet-up recommend me this app. I tell her about my concern and review 1km and meet up. After hearing, she recommend this. Actually, Serentrip is for traveler at the first. But they changed their name recently. So I can meet traveler or local people depending on my destination. I can use this easy, fast and safety.
Log in with your Facebook ID. Serentrip – Travel Buddy & Locals app users can create their travel spot, destination or plan and the app will match them in real time with travellers sharing the same destination. Find travelers & Locals with the same schedules as you. They can create and view each other’s profiles on Chat such as on Facebook, Instagram, website, etc., and Join Chat when they are ready to communicate with fellow travelers about a trip. So it’s quite safety for women.
The biggest advantage of Serentrip is that I can meet both foreigner, locals too. And can do travel or hang out. Thus, I recommend this for women, 80% of users was (20’s ~ 30’s) female.
A weeks ago, I met a Korean local girl. She majoring in tourism management. So we went to tourist spot together. she and me love travel so we made an appointment to trip Nami Island together.
Sure, some of these methods might sound unconventional, but thanks to these (especially Serentrip – Travel buddy & locas ) I’ve got some new friends in Korea (including Korean Local friends).
